Online Dating Tips: how to get started or get back into the online dating scene
So you’ve signed up to online dating, what now? Here are seven online dating tips to get you on the right path.
1. Make the first move
You think you’re ready to take online dating into the offline world; but before you meet in person, organise a video chat or a phone call. Talking to someone and hearing their voice is more intimate than messages, but too committal either. This will help you to decide if you want to take the next step and meet face-to-face.
2. Stretch before you run
Found someone that you’re interested in but not sure how to start the conversation? It can be as simple as a “wave” or “friend request”. You can take small steps and build a network of friends and business contacts first and then who knows where this can lead to.
3. Keep it real
Post a recent photo of yourself and be honest about your interests and qualities on your profile, even the ones you find quirky. You want people to like the real you from the get-go and don’t want to create an online persona that doesn’t meet people’s expectations in person.
4. Protect your privacy
While it’s important to be open and honest when building relationships, there’s such a thing as too trusting too soon, so use your common sense. Always keep your address, place of employment, and other personal information to yourself until you’ve gone out on at least a couple dates.
5. For the first date, short is great
Use the first date to see if things sizzle or fizzle. Organise something short and sweet like a lunch or coffee date, where you’re on a time limit. There’s nothing like going on a bad date with no exit strategy. If you feel a connection, you can plan something longer or more intimate for date number two.
6. Don’t take it personally
You’ve heard it before, but some people like vanilla ice cream, some like strawberry and some like pistachio, for no other reason than it tastes better to them. You can’t be everyone’s type and often it has little to do with who you are as a person. If the feeling isn’t mutual, move on and try and find someone who suits your taste buds.
7. Keep your options open
Just because you’ve had some great conversations or a couple of awesome dates, don’t shut up shop just yet. Keep your options open until you’re both ready to be exclusive. Even better, you both can still remain members and enjoy the other services we offer, from a career and professional perspective.
